In his early childhood Galen lived in Soda Springs, Shelley, Rigby, and Pocatello, Idaho, and at age nine moved with his family to Utah. He had attended Chubbuck and Alpine elementary schools, and in Provo attended Provost Elementary, Farrer Junior High, and Timpview High School where he graduated in 1993. He was a basketball star at Timpview and played in the 4A state tournament quarter-finals his junior year and in the state championship game his senior year. He was named an All-Region player as a junior and an All-Region All-State player as a senior, and he started college on a basketball scholarship. At the time of his death he was completing a bachelor's degree in philosophy at Utah Valley State College and preparing to attend law school.
Galen possessed great intellectual gifts and exceptional talents with the English language and always enjoyed a lively debate, being equally adept at arguing either perspective of almost any issue. He was remarkably skilled as an athlete and had an entrepreneurial drive and operated several personal ventures, including ProScapes as a landscape architect. He enjoyed a variety of music, creating pottery, golfing, playing computer games and chess, and reading.
He married Dawn Sisk on March 28, 1998. During their six years of marriage they lived in Provo and Springville and spent one year in Massachusetts.
