Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Pietro Ciriaci entered the Pontifical Roman Seminary, later furthering his studies at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum Sant'Apollinare, earning doctorates in philosophy, theology and canon law. Ordained priest on December 18, 1909, he lectured ethical philosophy and later fundamental theology, of which he was eventually named dean of the faculty at the Athenaeum Sant'Apollinare. Named scrittore of the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary on January 21, 1911 and promoted to registratore on December 15 that year, he was appointed adjunct aiutante di studio at the Sacred Congregation of the Council on February 22, 1913 and minutant at the Sacred Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs on June 16, 1917. Pope Pius XI elected him archbishop of the titular see of Tarso on February 15, 1928 and named him nuncio in Czechoslovakia, with Ciriaci receiving his episcopal consecration on the following March 18 at the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Lucina from Cardinal Pietro Gasparri. Transferred to the nunciature of Portugal on January 19, 1934, Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of January 12, 1953 with the title of Santa Prassede and named him prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Council. Named president of the Pontifical Commission for the Authentic Interpretation of the Code of Canon Law on May 31, 1955, he opted for the title of San Lorenzo in Lucina on September 26, 1964. Ciriaci passed away in his apartment at via Rusticucci on December 30, 1966, assisted by his confessor Fr. Salvatore Finelli C.Ss.R., and was buried in his title.
