Daniel was pressed into hard labor as a coal miner in his early teens due to unfortunate circumstances surrounding the family during and after the Civil War.

In 1884 Daniel and Miss Nannie Elizabeth Bell, daughter of Mary Johnson and Samuel G. Bell, of Missouri were married at a Quaker Meeting House. Daniel worked as a coal miner and farmed. They migrated from Missouri - first to Iowa, then to East Texas and then further westward, finally settling in Nolan County, Texas. They reared seven children to adulthood. Names and birth order of those children are:

Daniel suffered a debilitating stroke soon after his daughter-in-law, Josephine and three of his grandsons died within a short period of time. He never fully recovered his health and in early June of 1924, he suffered a final stroke which paralyzed him and led to his death on June 28th. He was buried in Sweetwater Cemetery, Sweetwater, Nolan County, Texas on June 29, 1924.
