William was the son of John F. and Angeline Lebo Bowman. During the Civil War, he served with his father in Co. A, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry. On Dec. 23, 1866, William married Sarah Jane Miller. They had nine children: Laura Agnes (born July 26, 1868), Anna Louisa (1872-1918), Charles Franklin (1874-1943, married Emma Amanda Shepley and had five children), Edward (1876-1938), Emma Jane (1878-1938, married Percy William Howe), Harry William Benjamin, Jr. (1880-1941), Robert Jacob (1883-1972), Elizabeth May, (1887-1953), and Mary Ellen (1889-1921).

William was a farmer, blacksmith, wheelwright and carpenter. He had musical talent, played the harmonica and banjo, and enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church.
