Obituary is from the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, Va. website (www.curriefuneralhome.net), posted November 2, 2015:

Peyton Richard Pittman, Sr., born September 5, 1935 departed this life peacefully on November 1, 2015. He is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Pittman, with whom he shared 60 years. Together they worked hard, devoting their life to raising their four children, Richard Pittman (Susan) of Irvington, Robin Hundley (Douglas) of Irvington, Amanda Gordon (Melvin) of Kilmarnock and Wanda Sears (Johnnie) of Roanoke. Peyton leaves many loved ones behind, including one sister, Elsie Rose.

His best loved role was being "PopPop" to eight grandchildren, Emily and Tom Lee, Ryan Gordon, Blair Abbott, Tracie Jones, Drew Hundley, Bradley Wilmore and his namesake, Payton "Rick" Richard Pittman, III .

In his earlier days, family and friends remember watching Peyton running bases and fielding balls for the Texaco Men's Softball team. Later, his recreation of choice was bowling, another team sport that he enjoyed so much. His passion for what was to become his life's work began when he started driving a truck at age 15. When his family was younger, he drove long distances for MandG Transportation. As the children grew and Peyton needed to be home more, he affiliated with J. C. Marsh and Co. in Irvington where he retired from his long career. Grandchildren well remember many poses with "PopPop" and his big, "always shiny" 18-wheeler Mac truck of which he was so proud.

When Peyton's health declined, he became a resident at Lancashire Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Kilmarnock. Highlights of that year were day trips back to Irvington to gather with family, always the center of his life. During his Lancashire residence he was blessed with frequent visits from lifelong friends and family. Peyton thrived as long as he had bread and ice cream, someone to listen to stories about his truck driving days, the World Series and someone with whom he could laugh. He loved to joke, and rarely missed an opportunity. He offered everyone something to eat and drink. It was his way of showing affection and he did it often. Peyton believed in hard work, fairness and sharing.

It was apparent to all who visited him that his great grandchildren renewed him with their smiles and hugs, of which there were many. Our grief comes from having to let him go to be with loved ones who have gone before him. Our sadness is that none of us, especially his prized and treasured great grandchildren, Kiera, Aubrey, Madeline, Jacob, Makayla, Aayden and Avery have not had long enough to embrace this fun, tender-hearted, generous and kind man. Until we meet again, "PopPop", you loved us well and you were well loved.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p. m. Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Irvington Baptist Church. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
