He died of complications from liver cancer at his home. He was a 1971 graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School, where he played football, baseball and basketball and nurtured a lifelong love of music.
He worked for years in the family business his father had started in the 1940s in Detroit before moving to its current location in Grosse Pointe Woods. He educated himself about jewelry and learned to cut gems and help with designing their settings. "He was one of the ones who supervised the whole production process," his brother said.
