US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the 2nd Congressional District of the State of Illinois in the United States House of Representatives from 1981 until 1993. While a youth, his family moved to Chicago and during World War II, he served with a segregated unit in the United States Army. After the war, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Roosevelt University and studied Law at Chicago-Kent College of Law, prior to focusing on Journalism. He founded the publication Citizen Community Newspapers and served as the editor and publisher from 1965 until 1979. After becoming active in local politics, Savage served as campaign manager for the Midwest League of Negro Voters. In 1968 and 1970, he ran unsuccessfully for election to the US Congress, prior to winning in 1980. During his tenure in Congress, he fought for minority causes and sponsored an amendment for the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1987. He served as chairman of the Economic Development Sub Committee of the House. Savage's career was not without controversy, as he became known by Jewish-Americans as an anti-Semite with his views of nonsupport towards Israel, in addition to other remarks he made about Jews. Savage adamantly opposed President Reagan's administrative policies. He died one day after his 91st birthday.
