Mary Elizabeth Rost Loss passed away peacefully on October 26, 2015.
Mary was born February 4, 1931 in Allamuchy, N.J. to Walter and Gertrude (Braun) Rost and grew up in Tranquility, N.J. Her parents were the founders of Walter's Corner, a local landmark, which continues to operate as Pub 517. She graduated from Newton High School in 1947.
After graduation Mary worked at Newton Memorial Hospital as a nursing aide and then as a telephone operator at the Newton Telephone Company. While working at the phone company she met Milton R. Loss and they were married on August 13, 1950.
After settling at Cranberry Lake in Byram Township, Mary and Milton had five children. She was the proud mother of Hal (Debra) of Seymour, Tenn., Mary Ann (Major, U.S. Army, Retired) (Scott Gagnon, Chief Warrant Officer 5, U.S. Army, Retired) of Raleigh, N.C., Robert of Hopewell, N.J., Heidi Loss Edelman (Marc) of Bristol, Conn., and Richard (Kim) of Coral Springs, Fla. While living in Byram, Mary and Milton were both active members of the Lakeland Emergency Squad, with Mary acting as the dispatcher.
In 1963 the family purchased the Tranquility Inn, and moved to Tranquility. At the tavern they held many charitable benefits and social events and provided a ball field for the local Little League. During their time in Tranquility, they helped found the Allamuchy-Green First Aid Squad, hosting and sponsoring several fund raisers, providing the initial home for the ambulance, and dispatching ambulance services.
After the sale of the tavern in 1973, Mary and Milt took a well deserved rest, eventually relocating to Blairstown in 1975. Mary worked at a number of companies over the intervening years, including Sutherland Packaging in Andover, Harris Pine Mills in Tranquility, Oraton Custom Products in Columbia, Blairstown Plumbing and Heating, Bauder Tree Service, and Newbaker Funeral Home, all in Blairstown.
Mary's greatest accomplishments included 63 years of marriage to Milton, her family, involvement in the founding of the Allamuchy-Green First Aid Squad, and graduating from high school at 16. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, and most recently attended services at St John's United Methodist Church in Hope. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and cycling.
In addition to her children survivors include her sister Ella Rost Ultz Yager, sister-in-law Wilma Loss Cunningham, seven grandchildren, Amanda Slavik (Nate), Andrew Baldauf (Nicole), Lee and Gretchen Edelman, Dr. Janice Loss-Ramji (Al), Brian and Bradley Loss, five great grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Milton passed in 2014.
She will be missed.
