RAPID CITY - Joseph Lawrence "Uncle Joe" Durant, 50, of Rapid City, passed away at his home on Saturday, January 11, 2003, after a brief struggle with cancer.

He was born on August 25, 1952, in Denver, CO, the youngest son of Richard and Clara "Bobbie" Durant. He was raised and attended school in Arvada and Edgewater, CO. In September of 1988, he moved to Rapid City, SD. He soon became known as "Uncle Joe," not just by his nieces and nephews, but also by all who knew him.

He worked for A&A Auto Salvage, and helped weld a 1953 blue Packard to the wall. He had quite a sense of humor and always had something to say to brighten his co-workers' day. A common occurrence even after he went to work at Buy Rite Surplus, where he was the Assistant Manager. He loved the customers and knew most of them by name. In his spare time, he loved fishing on the Missouri River with his buddies and their camper "Therapy." Listening to good music was also an important part of "Uncle Joe's" life. He loved to play the blues on his guitar and had a large music collection.

He is survived by his stepdaughter, Jennifer Lynn Durant of Colorado; two brothers, Dan Durant of Evanston, WY, and John Durant of Arvada, CO; and a sister, Edythe "Dee Dee" Adams of Rapid City, SD. He is also survived by his immediate nieces and nephews, Brandon, Dayna, Sam, Suzy, Zoc, Stephen, Bill, Isaac, Jackie, Becky, Chris, and Kathleen, who all loved him very much.

The family invites all who knew and loved him to a Memorial Service at the 4-H building at 601 Centre Street, Rapid City, SD, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2003.
