Lewis Bodell, age 19 years and a Mason, was enumerated September 25, 1850, at Washington, Licking County, Ohio, with Matilda Bodell 48, Adorimenta Bodell 22 and Loring Bodell 10. Lewis F. Bodell was enlisted by Captain David Black at Campo Seco, Calaveras County, California, September 24 and was mustered into Company H, Third Regiment of Infantry, at Stockton, San Joaquin County, October 20, 1861. At his enlistment Lewis stated that he was born at Utica, Ohio, and he was 30 years old and by occupation he was a Mason. His enlistment contract described him as being 5 feet 7¼ inches, with Sandy complexion, Blue eyes and Light hair. From December 16, 1861, to June 21, 1862, Private Bodell was on duty in the hospital as a Nurse. Private Bodell was paid by Major George Hay Ringgold Paymaster, U. S. Army, December 31, 1861. Private Bodell was appointed Corporal at Benicia Barracks, Solano County, California, January 24 and was reduced to the ranks March 30, 1862. During October and November, 1862, Private Bodell was on duty in the Quartermaster Department as a Laborer. During March and April, 1863, he was on duty in the Quartermaster Department as a Mason. During April, 1864, Private Bodell was on duty escorting a Government train to Franklin, Utah Territory. From May to July, 1864, he was absent on Detached Service at Salt Lake, Snake River Ferry and Camp Douglas. At various times while stationed at Camp Douglas Private Bodell was attached to the U. S. Army Hospital at that post as a Nurse. Private Bodell mustered out at Camp Douglas, October 27, 1864. Lewis was reenlisted by Second Lieutenant Levi Nicholas Tower, Recruiting Officer, at Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras County, California, December 17, 1865. Recruit Bodell was mustered into Company H, Eighth Regiment of Infantry, California Volunteers, by Captain A. Jones Jackson at San Francisco, California, December 28, 1864. Private Bodell was appointed Third Sergeant May 1, 1865. Sergeant Bodell was absent on furlough from July 25 to August 1, 1865. Sergeant Bodell mustered out at Fort Point, San Francisco, California, October 24, 1865. Lewis filed from California for a Civil War veteran's pension July 21, 1890, and received application No. 846,448 and certificate No. 670,287. Lewis F. Bodell, age 69 years and a Brick Mason, was enumerated June 6, 1900, at San Jose, Santa Clara, California. Lewis F. Bodell, age 73 years and a Mason, was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Volunteer Disabled Soldiers at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California, June 3, 1904. Ellen Bodell, at Santa Clara, California, was listed as his nearest relative. Lewis was discharged at his own request from the Pacific Branch July 12, 1905. Lewis F. Bodell, age 79 years, was enumerated May 4, 1910, at San Juan Bautista, San Benito County, California, with his son-in-law Lawrence W. Hardy 33, Matilda Hardy 34, Louis Hardy 6, Edith Hardy 5, Claude Hardy 3 and Kenneth Hardy 1.
