Betty Lou Heitkamp, 70, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, died February 26, in the comfort of her home. She was in the presence and tender love and care of her children, Betty's longtime ill pain has been lifted and she ; will now join her beloved husband, Duane, in a more beautiful place. Together they will be forever. She was born Betty Lou Eckman in Lancaster, PA, and raised in Bolivar, NY. Betty was a 1951 graduate of Bolivar High School, In the early 1950s, Betty moved to Green Cove , Springs, FL, where she met her ,future husband, Duane. They were happily married in 1952 and began their family soon thereafter Betty and her husband lived in many gorgeous places, such as Italy and Puerto Rico, while raising their family and fulfilling Duane's 23 years of service in the military.
Eventually, in 1971, the two settled in North Syracuse, NY. In earlier years, Betty enjoyed working in the restaurant field, but as her family grew, she dedicated herself to being a successful homemaker. Betty loved family gatherings, shopping, having coffee over conversation and playing cards, especially with her grandchildren. She would happily accompany in fun at the casino, traveling, boating and fishing. Betty was also a loyal SU basketball fan. She adored her grandchildren and boasted, "they were the best-looking grandkids around." Betty is survived by her six children: two sons, Scott Heitkamp of Kirkville and Gary Heitkamp of Constantia; four daughters, Shay Manley of Constantia, Patricia Costa of Central Square, Margaret Radler of Clay and Toni Heitkamp of Clay; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family will have private calling hours, but everyone is welcome to Betty's funeral services. Services will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 South Main St., and a mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, 409 South Main St., North Syracuse, with burial following in North Syracuse Cemetery.
