Pilot Officer Estelles Arthur Wickenkamp was the first Canadian to be awarded the M. B. E. (Order of the British Empire).
Taking off from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, 115 RAF Squadron's Vickers Wellington 1A (#P2524) aircraft, with an aircrew of six, was shot down by a German fighter aircraft while the Wellington, on an operation searching for enemy shipping off the cost of Denmark, was attacking the German battleships ‘Schamhorst' and ‘Gneisenau'.
