Name on birth record, immigration record, and 1885 Iowa Census is Johann Peter Hinkel. Immigrated to U.S. from Germany with his parents in 1882.

John Henry Hinkel, 89, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Friday, May 21, at Moline Lutheran Hospital, Moline, Illinois, where he had been a patient since March 29.

Visitation was at 12:00 noon on Sunday, May 23, where the Rosary was recited at 8:00 p.m. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 24, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Milan. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island.

John was employed as a carpenter with the John Deere Plow Works, Moline, for nine years and had also been a self-employed painter for many years.

He was born in Germany. He married Catherine Margaret Majerus in 1904 in Dubuque, Iowa. She died in 1959.

He was survived by daughters, Mrs. Arthur F. (Marie K.) Gravitt, with whom he resided in Coal Valley, Mrs. Margaret M. Parker, Milan, and Mrs. Bill E. (Cecilia A.) Hamor, Moline; sons, George P., Frank M. and Paul G., all of Dubuque, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Leo M., Hayward, Wisconsin, and Paul J. and Joseph J., both of Sherrill, Iowa.
