VAN DOMMELEN, Louise Jean, COL

COL Louise Jean Van Dommelen (Retired U.S. Army) went to be with her Lord on August 18, 2015, while surrounded by dear friends Diane Martyn, Eleanor Bewley, and her best friend since 1943, Genevieve Lescsak, along with her two cats next to her.

Louise was born November 12, 1919, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Peter and Henders "Minnie" (Hondorp) Van Dommelen. She was the youngest of their nine children, who have all preceded her to heaven, including: Peter Jr., Henrietta (Ruben Andersen), Hazel (Bill Baker, Sr.), Lester (Dorothy), Charles, and Mary (John "Jack" Lamb). Siblings Gertrude and George passed while very young.

She is survived by dozens of nieces and nephews and their progeny, uncountable loving co-workers and students, and a few very close and special friends. Louise graduated from Michigan State Normal College, now known as Eastern Michigan University with a B.S. in 1941, after which she taught high school.

She joined the U.S. Army during WWII on July 1, 1943. One year later she graduated from Walter Reed General Hospital as a Physical Therapist. She then served in India until the end of the war before returning to the States. Louise received her M.A. degree from Michigan State College in 1951. She continued to serve in the Army Reserves until she retired as a full Colonel in 1979, on her 60th birthday.

Louise created the Women's Athletic Department at Hope College in the late 1950s. Later she moved to Southern California where she taught at Whittier High School, and then new Sierra High School. She was a founding member of Rio Hondo Community College as the head of their Physical Education department. She worked at Rio Hondo until she was 88 years old.

Louise traveled widely and extensively, including long trips to Europe, China, Russia, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and spent the millennium New Year's Eve on the island of Bali. She will be cremated and a memorial service will held at First Presbyterian Church of Fullerton, CA.

She will be interred at Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland, Michigan in October.

We express sincere gratitude for the many family members and close friends who worked together and were present for her during her final months. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, September 4, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, Fullerton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church, Fullerton, Attn: The Family Promise.
