Son of John and Ida (Zalinski) Cawley. He graduated from Elkhart High School, Elkhart, Indiana, in 1968. Following high school, he served in the US Army in Vietnam where he was wounded in combat on two separate occasions and awarded a Purple Heart. After completing of his military service, he was employed by Vincent-Bach of Elkhart for 37 years. He was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast and was a member of DAV Post 19 and VFW Post 88, where he served as quartermaster.
