Mary Jo Ballard Abney, 88, of Chattanooga died Monday, July 20, 2015 at a local health care facility. She was born April 27, 1927 in Rock Spring, Georgia, the youngest child of George and Bertha Liner Ballard.
Mrs. Abney has the distinction of being the first female commissioned police officer for Hamilton County. She served under five Sheriff's and enjoyed the challenges of the complexity of her job. She retired in 1989.
Mrs. Abney was known throughout the city to many as "Mama Jo" and was loved and admired.
Survivors include children, LaRaye Ely, Terry (Sandra) Abney, Dale Young (Raymond) and Jill (Kent) Wallace; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 23 at 3:00 pm in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Minister John Cupp officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 Thursday.
Arrangements under the direction of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist-East Chapel, East Ridge, TN.
