ELIJAH J METCALF
Elijah J. Metcalf, 89, died at this home in Thomas Hollow Thursday, Jan. 24, from infirmative due to his age.
Mr. Metcalf was born in Ky. but came to Barry Co. when a young man & lived in that community where he passed away for more than 50 years. He was a good citizen & was held in high esteem by all who knew him.
He was a son of Hiram & Mary Ann Metcalf & was married to Mary Francis Sparks on Feb. 5, 1878. Eleven children were born to this union, four of the children proceeded him in death.
Mrs. Metcalf proceeded him in death some years ago. Three sons, Dave Metcalf of Washington, Dan Metcalf of Idaho & Sherman Metcalf of Colorado, & four daughters, Mrs. Sarah Phillips of Washington, Mrs. William Hickman of Powell, Mrs. Ernest Bryson of Colorado & Mrs. Ed Rydner of Exeter, survive.
Other survivors the three brothers, Elisha, of Exeter, & Rueben & John of Estol Co., Ky., & two sisters, Mrs. Martha Land, Neosho; & Frances Clark, Butterfield; 25 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren & eight great-great-grandchildren together with a host of other relatives & friends.
He was a staunch & devoted member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon with burial in the nearby Metcalf Cemetery. The relatives have the sympathy of their many friends. The Rev. Chas. VanZandt was in charge.
