Jennie Bowman, a young domestic, was alone in her employer's home when she was confronted and attacked by two intruders. There was a considerable struggle, on two floors of the house, and she was left horribly beaten. After some days of suffering, she died.

Louisville was outraged and enraged by the incident and after an enthusiastic manhunt, her attackers, bearing the wounds inflicted by Jenny were soon caught, tried, and hanged.

The community raised and donated funds to create a memorial to Miss Bowman's bravery. The memorial is the tombstone shown in the photo.
