Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class William James Hutton from Columbia, Missouri lost his life at the age of 22 on March 14, 1969.

Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class William James Hutton was born on August 25, 1946 and had 2 years of service arriving in Vietnam on December 22, 1968 assigned to H&MS-39, MAG-39, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, 3rd Marine Amphibious Force.

On March 14, 1969 HM2 William James Hutton lost his life when a U.S. Marine Corps CH-46D (#154841) from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 161 (HMM-161), call sign Yankee Romeo 31 (YR-31), was conducting a medical evacuation from LZ Sierra on Mutter's Ridge in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam when it was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and crashed. Five of the medical evacuees killed were from Mike Company, 3/4 Marines. One crewman, a Navy corpsman, HM2 William James Hutton was also killed. The helicopter reportedly was picking up wounded from the previous day's action. As the aircraft began to lift away from the LZ, a North Vietnamese Army soldier concealed nearby fired an RPG. The projectile struck the right rear of the helicopter causing a large explosion. The CH-46 rolled to it left, its main rotor blades making contact with the ground. After completely turning over, it came to a rest upright. Fire consumed the aircraft, burning from the rear cabin forward. Marines on the ground came out of their foxholes and were able to rescue the two pilots and two door gunners. Both gunners suffered severe burns and one pilot had a wound to his leg.
