Update 12/2015 from member#47072491:

Lucinda Smith Turner, born 27 March 1827 in Tennessee, was the fourth child of William Suddarth Turner and Elizabeth Pearl Smith. War of 1812 veteran, Major William S. and Elizabeth Smith Turner raised six children in Tennessee: Isaac Hardin, William R., Calvin Smith, Lucinda Smith, John Preston and Mary Mildred.

When 15-year old Lucinda married 27-year-old Andrew Jackson Sowell on 27 June 1842 in Guadalupe County, he was already a famous person in the Republic of Texas – he was one of the defenders of the Alamo in 1836, but survived the massacre when Lieutenant Colonel Travis sent him out to secure beef and reinforcements for the garrison. Andrew was the son of John Newton Sowell and Rachel Carpenter and born 27 June 1815 in Davidson County, Tennessee.

Andrew went on to serve in the early Texas Rangers called the Gonzales Rangers and under Texas Ranger commanders Hays, McCulloch, Mason, Caldwell and Callahan. During the Civil War, Andrew served in the Confederate army. Lucinda’s younger sister Mary Mildred Turner married Asa J. L. Sowell, the younger brother of Andrew Jackson Sowell.
In the years that followed the couple had ten children, all born in Seguin, Texas: Asa Jarmon Lee Sowell, born 1843, Rachel Elizabeth "Lizzie" 1845, Mary Mildred 1847, Virginia Bell 1849, Martha Allan 1852, John William 1855, Lewis Dean 1857, James Andrew 1861 and Albert Marion 1866.

In the 1880 Census “Lousinda” age 54 was living in Guadalupe County with her husband A. J. Sowell age 65 and four of their children Mary Mildred 28, Charley 16, Albert 13, Martha Allan Nicholson 25, son-in-law J.B. Nicholson 26 and two granddaughters.

In 1883, Andrew Jackson Sowell at age 67 came down with dysentery, according to his daughter Martha. His death was so sudden and such a shock to Lucinda that she could not cry and within a few days she developed lockjaw and followed her husband in death three days later at age 56.
Andrew and Lucinda both died at their farm home about twelve miles east of Seguin, Andrew on January 4 and Lucinda three days later on January 8. Cemetery records show that they are buried in the Rogers-Mofield Cemetery on the Hoover Ranch east of Seguin, but no markers survive. In 1957, the State of Texas erected monuments in the San Geronimo Cemetery to pay tribute to Andrew Jackson Sowell and his brother John N. Sowell Jr. Andrew’s monument is inscribed “His Wife Lucinda Turner Sowell born 1827 - died 1883” – Research from “The History of Gonzales County, Texas” and Rilla Hartsoe
