Funeral arrangements are schedule for Thursday, November 19, 2009, 1 PM at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Ray Hammond officiating. Burial will follow in Beechwood Cemetery. The family visitation is an hour prior to the service, starting at 12 Noon at the church.
Helen attended Durham Public Schools, graduating from Hillside High School, Class of 1947. She received her Associate Degree in Nursing from Durham Business Nursing School.
Helen was the first African American nurse to work at Tuft New England Medical Center in Boston. After twenty years (20) of service, she returned to Durham and joined the staff at the Veterans Administration Hospital and the Brian Center.
Helen was a faithful and devoted member of Union Baptist Church. She served the The Thrifty Savings Club, Senior Missionary and the Pastor's Aide Society.
Her favorite ways to past time were cooking, traveling, dancing, shopping, and serving God. She was a "Mother" to all. Helen was a loving and devoted sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
Helen was preceded in death by three of her children, Jean P. Adams, Douglas Adams, and Alexander Adams; a grandson, Terry Adams; and her devoted husband, Matthew Davis.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a son, Julius "Dickie" Adams; a daughter, Madeline "Nadine" Moore (Melvin); sisters, Alice Johnson (Freddie) and Carolyn Daye (Al); seven grandchildren, Alexia, Lucretia, Kerwin, Rashaad, and Hellena (Carlton); 13 great-granchildren; one great-great grandchild and numerous other relatives and friends.
