Vernon William Kolze, M.D. Dr. Vernon William Kolze, 86, passed away on March 4, 2005, after surgery followed by illness in Cox Medical Center South [Springfield, MO]. He was born Feb. 7, 1919, in Oak Park, Ill., in the family home. Dr. Kolze was a recent resident in the Manor at Elfindale. Dr. Kolze graduated from Cleveland Heights High School, in Cleveland, Ohio, in January of 1937. He graduated from the Western Reserve College in Cleveland in 1941 and graduated from the George Washington University, School of Medicine, in September of 1944, with the Doctorate of Medicine. Prior to graduation from medical school, Dr. Kolze met and married Mary Ann Wright from Doniphan, Mo., on April 23, 1944. Vernon and Mary Ann met in the nation's capital during World War II, when Mary Ann was employed at the Pentagon in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War and Vernon was a medical student. After graduation from medical school and an internship at the Emergency Hospital in Washington, D.C., Dr. Kolze entered the Army and served as a doctor in the Medical Corps; he was the Officer in charge of the Dispensary at Fort Buchanan in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After his Army service, Dr. Kolze practiced general medicine for three years in Doniphan, Mo., as an associate of Dr. J.E. Williams. Next, he returned to George Washington University where he specialized in surgery, and became the Chief Resident Surgeon of Emergency Hospital in Washington, D.C. In 1954, Dr. Kolze settled in Springfield where he established his general surgery practice in association with both Cox (Burge) and St. John's Hospitals. Dr. Kolze was a member and past President of the Greene County Medical Society, and a member of the American College of Surgeons, and other professional medical organizations. Dr. Kolze became a member of Kingsway United Methodist Church and Hickory Hills Country Club upon locating to Springfield. Dr. Kolze will be remembered as an avid and accomplished amateur golfer. Dr. Kolze was Low Gross Champion in the 1964 Greene County Medical Society Annual Tournament, and Low Gross A-Flight Champion in the GCMS 1969 and 1970 tournaments. Dr. Kolze was a Runner-Up in the Hickory Hills 1964 Club Championship, and was A-Flight Champion in 1975. Dr. Kolze won several other A-Flight tournaments in southwest Missouri, including the prestigious 1965 Ozark Amateur. Dr. Kolze was a brave cancer survivor (larynx) in the 1980's, and returned to his love of golf and achieved the HHCC B-Flight Championship in 1990 at the youthful age of 61. Dr. Kolze survived another bout with cancer (bladder) in his early 80's. Dr. Kolze was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann, who passed away on July 7, 2003; his beloved brother, Ralph Martin "Junior"; and his parents, Ralph Martin Kolze and Esther Bieck Kolze. He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Thomas Joseph "Tom" and Linda Sue, and their children, MaryJo Alicia and LoriAnne Amelia, Phoenix, Ariz., and Vernon William "Bill" and Marcia Ellen, and their children, Christopher Thomas and Emily Ann, Borger, Texas; his brother-in-law, Thomas Blunk Wright, Springfield; two cousins and childhood playmates, Jeanette (Osterling) O'Shea Wright, Sarasota, Fla., and Melvin Kolze, San Diego, Calif.; his nephew, Ralph Martin Kolze III, "Skip"; and two nieces, Sue Kolze, Ellenton, Fla., and Carol Budke, Cape Coral, Fla. Vernon was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. He was a skilled, meticulous surgeon, caring, and dedicated to providing the utmost care for his patients and community. Memorial services will be held Monday, March 7, 2005, at 7 p.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, 1947 E. Seminole, Springfield. Visitation will follow. The Reverend Charles Buck of Kingsway United Methodist Church will be officiating. Private iterment will be at a later date.
