United States Army Brigadier General. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and served as Aide to General James S. Wadsworth of the New York Volunteers. Promoted Major he served with the 94th New York Infantry until November 23, 1863, leaving the regiment as Lieutenant Colonel. For commanding the 94th at the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862 and at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863, he was awarded a citation, with a Silver Star for gallantry. Remaining in the Army after the war, he served in Army Ordnance, in the plains Indian Wars and as commander of Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. For actions against Paiute-Bannock Indians, at Umatilla, Oregon, on July 8, 1878, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He retired on August 17, 1903, as Brigadier General with over 40 years of service. In retirement he was an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic and was Grand Marshal of the World's Fair in Louisiana, 1904, riding a white horse at the head of the parade.
