Thomas Hardy Sutton was born to Henry and Nancy Cotton Sutton. His father was killed in the Battle of Sharpsburg, MD on September 17, 1862. His mother remarried to Daniel Hines and they lived in the Seven Springs, NC community just in Lenoir County on part of the plantation that was owned by his grandfather, Benjamin Sutton. Thomas had a brother, Henry Sutton and they were reared by their mother and step-father with their five step-siblings. He met and married Patience Celeste Outlaw who lived in neighboring Duplin County and they lived and reared their family on land owned by her family in the Outlaw's Bridge community. Widowed, aging and suffering from cancer, he lived out his last years with his daughter Patience and her family where he died at the age of 77.
