Michael's Irish parents married at St. Paul's Basilica, Toronto in 1848. Micheal born in 1863 was one of seven children orphaned after their father died in 1870 and their mother in 1871. The younger children were cared for and supported by their older sisters Bedelia and Sabina.

Michael married Mary Delaney in 1893, and Mary helped him pass the Civil Service Exams. He had a successful career as a Custom's Appraiser. He was honored with the gift of a grandfather clock from the Customs Staff when he retired on April 30, 1930.

Michael's beloved wife passed away in 1919 from Graves, an over active thyroid, when their youngest child was only 10 years old. Michael was a devoted single parent to his children, and a dedicated member of St. Paul's Parish, Toronto where he contributed his energy and time to charity works in the community.
