S. Jeanette (Ricker) Axelby, was born 02 February 1886 in St. John's, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Hiram and Mary Sophia (Greenwood) Ricker. She relocated to the Northwest corner of Connecticut (U.S.A.) by the age of 13.

Jeanette was a very strong swimmer, famous for her daily circumnavigation of Lakeville Lake, despite a history of infantile paralysis. In addition to her work at the bank, she tought swimming as part of the recreation program at the Town Grove. In 1970, she was one of the scuba divers who dove to a depth of 60 to 80 feet to search for a small plane that had crashed into the lake. Her intuitive knowledge of the lake eventually led to the discovery of the two victims.

Mrs. Axelby was predeceased by her husband, George Axelby in 1925. She was survived by her five daughters: Mrs. Alice Hillyer and Mrs. Jeannette Banks, both of Niantic, New London County, Connecticut; Mrs. Gertrude DuBois and Mrs. Lydia Dodge, both of Falls Village, Litchfield County, Connecticut; and Mrs. Eva Contreras of Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. Mrs. Axelby's last residence was in Falls Village with her daughter, Mrs. Dubois. She died on Wednesday, December 7, 1983 at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, New London County, Connecticut.

Funeral services were conducted at the Newkirk Funeral home in Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut at 11 am on Saturday, December 10, 1983. The service was officiated by the Rev. Charles Bevan, Jr. of St. John's Episcopal Church in Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut. The internment took place at Salisbury Cemetery. The family plot, Pratt Section, Plot 623, which in 2015 also included a matching memorial stone for George Axelby (1882-1925), was originally purchased by Francis Axelby.
