Father Walsh was a son of the late Joseph M. and Agnes Gilligan Walsh, and a native of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
After earning his bachelor's degree, Father Walsh taught English and Latin at Gonzaga College High School Washington, D.C. After studying theology in preparation for his ordination in 1970, he attended Harvard University where he studied near-Eastern language and civilizations, and Sacred Scripture. Father Walsh received his Ph.D in theology from Harvard in 1978.
He taught theology at Woodstock, N.Y., for one year before joining the theology faculty at Georgetown University in 1973. Father Walsh served and taught at Georgetown for more than 40 years, including three semesters of teaching and ministering at its School of Foreign Service-Qatar. His recent courses included introduction to Biblical Literature, Power and Politics in the Biblical Tradition, Apocalyptic Imagination, and Approaches to the Bible.
Funeral services for Father Walsh were held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Georgetown, on July 8, 2015.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Joan and his eldest brother Joseph Walsh.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs Phyllis Ann Powell and her husband Harry; a brother, Phillip Walsh and his wife Rozalyn; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
