Alva Claude Petty, 89, New Iberia, La., a native of Afton, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, at Harrison Hospital, Bremerton, Wash., after a long illness. Mr. Petty was born Feb. 23, 1907, at Zena. He worked for a bridge building crew around Oklahoma after graduating from high school. Beginning in the early 1930s, he worked in oil fields around the world while employed by Loffland Brothers Drilling Contractor, Tulsa. His positions included motor man, driller and maintenance supervisor. He retired in 1972, after 38 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Iberia. He was a member of the Wistarly Chapter No. 61, Order of the Eastern Star A.F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rite No. 32. He married Elizabeth Marie Rundle on July 8, 1932. She died in 1988. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Evelyn Biesemeyer, Palmer, Alaska; a son, Willis L. Petty, Bremerton, Wash.; a brother, Arley F. Petty, Miami; and a sister, Ruby Grunden, Afton. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Jim Thomas Funeral Home, Afton, with the Rev. Janelle Brammer officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Afton.
