Albert Wurz

MT. SHASTA Albert Eugene Wurz, 79, passed away on Jan. 6, 2000, of natural causes.

He was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Sunnyvale to Louis Otto Wurz Sr. and Anna Isabel Wurz.

Al was a rancher as was his father, Louis, and also worked in construction. The Wurz family owned ranches in both Napa and Sunnyvale, growing various fruit and field crops.

He attended Fremont High School in Sunnyvale and San Jose State College.

He enlisted in the Navy in September of 1942 and received his pilot's wings in September of 1944.

He married Dorothy Martin on Oct. 1, 1944, at the Methodist Church in Napa.

He retired from the Naval Reserves as a lieutenant commander in December of 1965 after having flown many different types of aircraft, including PT-17, Stearman, BT-13, Voltees, SBN Beechcrafts, OS2U Vought Kingfisher, J2F Grummen Duck, F4U Vaught Corsair, F2H Banchee Jet and S2F Gurmmen Tracker. He flew over 3,000 hours as both a civilian and with the Navy.

In addition, he was a briefing officer or command pilot on numerous missions while flying for the Napa County Aero Squadron. He owned a variety of aircraft, including a Timm, N2T Tutor, two Stinsons, a Piper Cherokee and a Cessna 206. Al joined the Aero Squadron in 1948 while he was flying with the Navy Reserves. He served as administrative officer, executive officer and commanding officer of the Aero Squadron, and had participated in dozens of fugitive searches, downed aircraft searches, surveillance missions, missing person searches and practice missions.

He was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Weekend Loafers.

Al was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. He loved traveling.

Al Wurz is survived by his wife, Dorothy, achieving 55 years of marriage; four children, Ronald Wurz, Lee Wurz, Claudia Luque and Laura Beaufils; his grandchildren, Philip Luque, Amanda Luque, Danielle Beaufils, Rachel Beaufils and Lucas Wurz; his sister, Muriel Schell; and brother, Louis O. Wurz Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1226 Salvador Ave., with the Rev. Deana J. Reed officiating.

Entombment will be at Tulocay Cemetery, Visitation will be held today from noon to 8 p.m. at Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail.
