Ray was born Dec. 22, 1918, in Baker, Idaho. His parents were Emmet and Alice Anderson. Ray was the fifth child of six born to Emmet and Alice. His siblings have all preceded Ray in death. From eldest to youngest, they were Russell, Louise, Dorothy, Frank and Harvey.

Shortly after Ray’s birth, both his mother and he contracted the 1918 flu epidemic and survived. When Ray was a small child, his family moved to Butte, Mont., where they lived until 1929, when Alice brought her three younger children to Calistoga after separating from Emmet.

Ray graduated from Calistoga High School as part of the class of 1937. He became a miner and also helped build the Calistoga Dam.

After World War II began, Ray enlisted in the Navy and became a Sea Bee. He traveled all over the South Pacific building roads, bridges, air strips, barracks and more. During an R-and-R leave in Brisbane, Australia, he met his future wife, Marjorie Webster, at a USO dance. He returned after the war and they married Aug. 2, 1947.

Ray and Marj moved to the Napa Valley in 1948. Ray used his carpentry skills to secure employment. They began their family and were blessed with two daughters, Desley and Denise.

When Ray had the opportunity to join a partnership in a road and bridge construction company, he jumped at it. He eventually started his own construction company, the Raymond Earl Anderson Construction Co., mainly constructing bridges and overpasses, many in Napa County and all in Northern California.

During Ray’s free time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was also an Odd Fellow in the Napa Chapter. In his later years, he took up golf and was a member of the Napa Valley Golf Club. He and his best friend, Hal Kingsley, enjoyed many rounds of golf and laughter there.

Ray and Marj were blessed with four grandchildren: Tiffany Doty, Jason Cowan, Jennifer Watkins and Scott Cowan.

After Ray retired, he and Marj bought 3 1/2 acres of mostly barren land on which he planted more than 100 fruit trees. Ray would say, “What good is a tree if it does not bear fruit!”

Marjorie preceded Ray in death on June 8, 2000.

Ray has been blessed with five great-grandsons: Jayden Doty, Dominic Doty, Will Watkins, Donovan Cowan and Bo Watkins. Their youth revitalized Ray’s imagination and he enjoyed dressing up in costume at Halloween and playing games with them. Ray will be missed by his family and friends, ranging from Napa and Chico, Calif., to Indiana and Australia. Ray will also be missed by his faithful companion, our family’s dog, Bella, who stayed by Ray’s side always.

A celebration of Raymond’s life will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at 2066 Big Ranch Road in Napa.

Please come and share a memory with his family and friends.
