Samuel Lee Nesmith was born on October 16, 1951 to Herbert Nesmith Jr. and Anne Nesmith McKnight in Kingstree, South Carolina.
By the age of 16, Samuel left home with a dream for a bigger and brighter future. He moved to Indiana where he furthered his education through the Job Corps and began his training for his boxing career. With training, determination, and faith, Samuel became the North American Boxing Federation’s Middleweight Title holder who compiled a career record of 34 wins, 7 losses and 0 draws.
He defended a 160 pound crown title in his hometown and ranked No. 3 in the Middleweight World Class Division. By 1972, he proudly represented the United States in the summer Olympics held in Munich West Germany. He had countless accomplishments, belts, trophies and even received the key to the City of Indianapolis.
Samuel continued his career until 1991, when a hometown visit to his mother reconnected him with his high school sweetheart Deloris whom he had previously left behind. Twenty two years later Samuel had become a husband, best friend, a support system, a confidante and someone whom you could turn to for advice in any situation. Samuel is known to many as “Slammin Sammy”, to his close and dear friends as “Country” and at home he was “Papa”. Upon entering a room his laughter and his smiles were piercing and with his Chicago stepping and his “Cheaterization” card skill you could always expect a memorable evening. Samuel, you will truly be missed.
Samuel was a man who loved God he became a member of Back to the Bible in Englewood New Jersey in the 1990’s and joined the Trustee Ministry in 1993. In 1998 he joined Community Baptist Church of Englewood and was also a Trustee there until he relocated to Bridgeton and joined Union Baptist Church of Bridgeton New Jersey.
