Ernest S. Marshall is the son of Conrad and Mary Marshall, born in Marshall County, Illinois, Jan. 5, 1866. He came with his parents to Johnson Co.,KS on October 8, 1866. He married Nannie L. Collins of Linwood, Leavenworth Co., KS, on May 14, 1891, in Lawrence, Douglas Co., KS. They had 3 children, 2 sons, and a daughter who married Harry Miller of De Soto. The younger son, Harry, enlisted in WWI and died at Philadelphia, PA, during the flu epidemic of Sept. 1917. Ernest was a farmer and with his father originated the Harvest Queen wheat from 1895-1898. It was popular with many of the farmers in the county in the following years. Harry Sr and Jr had homes in the DeSoto Bottoms that escaped severe damage in the 1903 flood. In 1922, they moved into a modern home located next to the City Hall. (From the DeSoto History Book, published in 2007).
