POPLAR BRANCH - Dorothy Guard Tomlin, 89, of 873 Aydlett Road, Poplar Branch, died Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Born in Jarvisburg on June 29, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Guy Picot Cooke Sr. and Minnie Bradshaw Cooke and was the wife of the late John Etheridge Guard Jr., the father of her children, and the late Charlie Tomlin. Four years after the death of her husband, John, Dorothy enrolled in college at age 39 and, overcoming several obstacles, completed a bachelor's degree in elementary education in four years. She taught in the elementary schools of Currituck County and retired with 20 years of experience. Her determination and work ethic were an inspiration to her family and others with whom she came in contact. She was a devoted member of her church and was buoyed by her faith.

Mrs. Tomlin is survived by two daughters, Janice Bray and husband, Frank, of Maple and Joanne Caroon and husband, Tom, of Manteo; four sons, John Guard III and wife, Loretta, of Edenton, James Guard and wife, Elaine, of Aydlett, Jack Guard and wife, Denise, of Southern Shores and Jeff Guard and wife, Therese, of Greenville; 12 grandchildren, Kelli Bogle (Steve), Kevin Bray (Christie), John Guard IV (Kelly), Chris Guard (Stacey), Kim Teele (Jim), Steven Caroon, Joshua Caroon, James Guard Jr. (Amy), Amy Blankenship (Andy), Caroline Guard, Chuck Guard and Corinne Guard; and 10 great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Guard, Kaylee Guard, Ethan Guard, Noah Guard, Chloe Teele, Tyler Bray, Landon Bray, Jaxson Bray, Stephanie Bogle and Maggie Ann Blankenship.

In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Guy P. Cooke Jr.; and a sister, Virginia C. Saunders.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church, Poplar Branch, with the Rev. Dr. Susanna Fitch-Slater officiating. A private graveside service will follow in the family cemetery in Aydlett.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City. Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City is assisting the Guard family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Mrs. Tomlin's honor be made to Sharon United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 182, Poplar Branch, NC.
