"When Mrs. F. F. Martinez and children returned home from a trip to the village Tuesday evening, July 3rd, they found the husband and father dead on the floor of his room. Mr. Martinez was prepared for retiring and his heart had apparently failed him without warning or without struggle. He had been suffering from a cold and was rather feeble but his sudden demise was entirely unexpected. Federico F. Martinez was born in Santiago de Cuba on April 27th, 1828. His first wife was Miss Brooks, whom he married in Santiago in 1853, by whom he had three children, two of whom are now living, Countess Bolssy de Anglar who resides in Paris and Manuel J. Martinez, who is supposed to be in Spain. Mr. Martinez first came to this village in the summer of 1872, stopping at the Haskell Cottage. In 1879 he built the cottage east of the Tailer estate and quite regularly spent the summer here. Seventeen years ago he made this village his permanent residence. In 1897 he married Mary Krausch, who with her two children, Frank A. Martinez and Isabel M. Martinez, survive him. The funeral will be held at the home at 2 p. m. on Friday, the Reverend A. L. Evans officiating, and interment will be made in Lakeview cemetery. F. F. Martinez was an artist of unusual talent and leaves behind many paintings that will perpetuate his memory. In Cuba, particularly, was his work highly appreciated, and some of his portraits adorn the public buildings of Santiago. He spent many years in study, having attended the Atelier Picot in Paris and various studios in Florence. He was particularly fond of the city of Florence and a few years ago took his family abroad to visit the scenes of his student life. Mr. Martinez had many friends in this village who liked the man and appreciated his art." ["Richfield Springs Mercury" (Richfield Springs, NY), Thurs., July 6, 1916, p. 4]
