CONCORD

Sophie A. Kurpieski-Abernathy-Walker, 91, of Vallejo, passed away Thursday, May 3 at Stonebrook Healthcare Center in Concord following a long illness.

A native of Wilkes Barre, Pa., Sophie was a lifelong resident of Vallejo. She was a musician and played the piano and organ for almost every organization and club in Vallejo. She was well known for playing at The Belmont Bar which was owned and operated by her son, Gary Abernathy. She started playing at the age of 5 and began her music career training in Europe. Sophie was trained in classical music in Germany and Poland. She played in all the bars on lower Georgia Street., during World War II, Mare Island, Sam's Club in Vacaville and the Green Door in Napa.

Sophie was a life member of the Musician's Union Local #367 of Vallejo and #541 of Napa, past president of Pochahontas Club of the loka Council. member of the Amay Garden Club, Emblem Club, Ladies Order of the Moose Lodge in Vallejo and former member of Sons Of Italy, Beatrice Portinari #1626.

She is preceded in death by sons, Darrell and Gary Abernathy and brothers, Edwin and Chester Kurpieski.

Survivors include son, Stan (Pat) Abernathy of Concord; sister, Rose Southern of Vallejo; granddaughter, Leslie (Chad) Linderman of Concord; and great-grandson, Jacob of Concord.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 8 at Twin Chapels Mortuary, 1100 Tennessee St., Vallejo. A celebration of Sophies' life will immediately follow the funeral services at The Vallejo Moose Lodge, 337 Nebraska St., Vallejo.

Burial will be private in Tulocay Cemetery, Napa. Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 7 at Twin Chapels Mortuary.

Donations may be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.
