Info I have from one of the descendants is that he was married 1st to Martha Jane McBride on 27 Apr 1851 (her burial unknown) and 2nd to Nancy Wilmoth on 8 Sep 1882, both in Surry County. He was born 2 Jan 1828 in Surry and d. 1911 in Surry.
The descendant says he fathered a few children out of wedlock, one of thich was Ida Levada Bates (presumed adopted by Drew White). A delayed birth certificate for Lola Alma Whitaker (one of Ida's children) shows mother Ida had remarried a Johnson (now known as William Kirklin Johnson) and was living in High Point, NC in 1972; shows mother was Lucinda Whitaker and no father shown.
On Ida's marriage to Wesley Whitaker it shows Wesley age 34 and Ida age 17; married by M. Y. Dockery, JP; witnessed by L. M. Wall, E. B. Draughn, & L. W. Isaacs. Shows Ida's name as "Miss" and daughter of Lucinda "Cindy" Whitaker (dead), and no father although it is presumed to have been William Bates.
