John was a graduate of West Point in the Class of 1826. He served during the Mexican War in the Corps of Topographical Engineers. He participated in the siege of Veracruz, the battles of Cerro Gordo and Churubusco and the assault on Mexico City. For his distinguished service he won brevets to major and lieutenant colonel. After the war he surveyed the border between Mexico and the United States.
Lieut. Colonel, US Army. In the 1850 U.S. Census, John and Jane were living in the next household from her widowed mother, Caroline, in Washington, DC, and John was a "Col. Topo. Engineer."
John died of Cholera in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, where he was in charge of river improvements. His body was lost or destroyed.
