Local Marine Dies Of Rare Tropic Fever
Ira Nevel Had Been In Marines For Over Six Year Period
Ira Otis Nevel, Jr., 22, of 117 Lookout Avenue, succumbed at 9 o'clock yesterday morning in Charleroi-Monessen Hospital to the effects of a rare tropical disease of fever which it is thought he contracted while serving with the United States Marines in China. Nevel had been enlisted with the Marines for six years. During this period, he served three and a half years in China and one in Guam. Nevel, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ira O. Nevel, Sr., of 117 Lookout Avenue, was stricken fatally with the illness June 2, of this year. Born in Johnstown, April 1, 1915, he had enlisted in the United States Marines on January 30, 1930, and served until January 31, 1936. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira O. Nevel, Sr.; three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Meluch of Charleroi, and Patricia and Ann Nevel, at home; and one brother, Ben Boyer Nevel, at home. Military rites in charge of the local American Legion post will be held at the home, 117 Lookout Avenue, Saturday, July 24, at 2:30 o'clock and at Monongahela Cemetery, where the remains will be interred.
