Jabez Seymour Dodge came to Illinois in 1835. In 1851, he went with his brother William to California to search for gold but returned three years later. He was a farmer by trade. His farmhouse stood on the Northwest corner of Hill and Taylor in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
He married Almeda Jane Powers on December 18,1848.
The following is from History of DuPage County, Il. 1882:
"Served on school district several years, highway commissioner 11 yrs.
He made 2 trips to California, 1852 crossing the plains and stopped at Salt Lake City and listened to the great prophet of the Desert City. Returned Feb 1854. In April 1866, he went back by way of New York City and Panama, and returned the same way getting home on July 4 1866."
