Walter Sigurd Almquist, Jr.Asheville - Walter Sigurd Almquist, Jr., age 93, of 300 Falling Leaf Ln. Apt. 317, ascended to be with his heavenly Father Sunday, May 24, 2015.Mr. Almquist was born November 5, 1921 in Boston, Mass. to the late Walter S. Almquist, Sr. and Margaret MacPherson Almquist. He was a 24 year veteran of the U.S. Navy. He also retired from Prudential Life of Boston. In addition, he had workedfor Conway Real Estate and served as a First Reader for 15 years with First Church of Christ Scientist in Black Mountain. Mr. Almquist was an avid golfer, loved helping neighbors and serving his community. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed his morning jumble. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Monika Karla Almquist who passed in 2007. Surviving are his children, David W. Almquist, Sharon A. Jones and husband Harry, James S. Almquist and wife Amy, Retired Col. Tommy Almquist and Marcia Hampton; grandchildren, Sharra T. Jones, Shyanne M. Jones, James Almquist, Jr., Joshua M. Almquist, Brian Hampton, Wes Hampton, Joseph Hampton; along with several great grandchildren.His memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 29, 2015, in the Chapel of Western Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery, Black Mountain with Reverend Jonathan Scott Melton officiating. -
