Harvey Lee Hayes of Mills River, 79, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.

Mr. Hayes was born in Buncombe County to the late Herbert "H.D." Hayes and Mary Morrison Hayes. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Johnny Lance.

Harvey was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and fought in the Korean Conflict. He loved his family and friends dearly and was an avid fisherman. He retired from Schwitzer and Taylor Instruments as a tool maker.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Barnwell Hayes; two daughters, Carolyn Ballinger and her husband, Randy and Linda Lance; two sisters, Cynthia Knight and her husband, Gordon, and Pat Banks and her husband, Calvin; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren and many claimed grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Fletcher First Baptist Church with Pastors Roy Waldroup and David Gentry officiating. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park with military honors.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.
