Professor Max Zach was the son of Heinrich and Julia Zach.
He was born on August 31,1864 in Lemberg, L'viv,Ukraine.
He received his musical education in the famous Vienna Conservatory of Music in Austria.
On completion of his education he traveled to the United States in 1886. It was in Boston, Massachusetts where he began his career of thirty five years total.
He first joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra playing the Viola from 1886-1907.He also conducted with the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1896-1902,then again from 1906-1907.
It was in 1907 he moved to Saint Louis,Missouri,to be the Conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.
This started out as a great challenge to him,as the audience was not as receptive as it was in Boston. He also faced a challenge with the orchestra itself. As they were in need of a leader.
From 1907-1921 he became the third man to Conduct there. He brought the orchestra up to standards. With time they were recognized and soon took on a national reputation.
His hard work and love for music made the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra what it is today.
Sadly,an infected tooth which he had pulled caused his untimely death in 1921.It was in the time where anti-biotics were unheard of causing the infection to go through his bloodstream.
He was sent back to Boston to be buried in the Forest Hills Cemetery.
He left behind his wife of thirty years, Blanche(Going)Zach, whom he married on July 4,1891 in Boston. They had three children Leon,Phillip and Eleanor.--Written by -M.L.Bown
