Bobbie James "Bob" Smith age 89, of rural Bussey, passed away Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Mercy Medical Center of Des Moines.

Bobbie was born January 2, 1926 to Gerald Clavis and Helen M. Smith in Mahaska County, Iowa. The family soon moved into Marion County and Bobbie attended school in Bussey. He graduated from Bussey High School, Class of 1943.

After high school Bobbie drove truck for a short time before serving in the United States Navy. Bobbie served from 1943 to 1946, during WWII as an electrician on a troop carrier.

On August 26, 1949 Bobbie and Betty Louise Stephens were united in marriage. They shared 65 years of Marriage together and are blessed with three children: Sherlyn, Sandy, and Sheila. Shortly after their marriage Bobbie and Betty purchased his grandfather's farm just outside of Bussey were they lived and farmed.

Bobbie worked for Standard Oil as a bulk agent for 18 years. He later worked at the Twin Cedar's School and then he retired from Pella Corp. Bobbie was a member of the Independent Bible Church of Bussey. He enjoyed horses and watching horse races and bull riding. He loved all his family and he especially made time for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bobbie is survived by his wife of 65 years Betty Smith of rural Bussey; his three daughters, Sherlyn Silvers of rural Bussey, Sandy(Art)Nicholson of rural Bussey, and Sheila(Chuck)Wilcutt of Knoxville; two grandchildren, Toby(Melissa)Nicholson, and Abby(Jade)Mockenhaupt; and five great-grandchildren, Logan and Loran Nicholson and Ali, Ami, and Jax Mockenhaupt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Helen Smith; and his three sisters, Logene Fall, Margaret Dunkin, and Billie Lorraine Smith in infancy.

Visitation will be at 2 pm Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Bobbie's family will be present at the funeral home from 6-8 pm Monday evening. A funeral service will be held at 11 am Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Independent Bible Church of Bussey, with Pastor Andrew Tuttle officiating. Following services burial with military honors will be held at Liberty Cemetery of rural Bussey. A memorial in Bobbie's memory will be established to the Independent Bible Church. The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is assisting Bobbie's family with services.
