Suffolk - Martha Brewer Godwin Saunders passed away on November 22, 2013. A daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. F. Whitney Godwin, she was the widow of R. Curtis Saunders, Jr. She was also predeceased by a son, Carson Brewer "Sandy" Saunders.

Born on April 26, 1926, Mrs. Saunders was a lifelong resident of Suffolk. She was a member of the Suffolk High School Class of 1944 and a graduate of Mary Baldwin College where she served as President of the Alumnae Association. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Saunders taught at Chuckatuck High School. She was active at Main Street United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees, the Pastor Parish committee, and as an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was a Past President of the Nansemond River Garden Club and the Suffolk Literary Club, a founding member of the Westover Garden Club, a member of the Junior Volunteer Service Corps, and she served on the Boards of Morgan Memorial Library and the Norfolk Symphony.

Survivors include her sister Judith Whitney Godwin; her son, Whitney Godwin Saunders and his wife Ellen; her grandchildren, Harrison Godwin Saunders and his fiancée Rachel Lee Shonk, Mary-Carson Brewer Saunders Stiff and her husband Joshua David Stiff, and Grace Whitney Saunders; brother-in-law, Carson Elmore Saunders and his wife Jean; sister-in-law Ann Saunders; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Ms. Jerome Hudson, her caregiver and friend.

The burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Monday, November 25, 2013, at Main Street UMC, 202 N. Main St, Suffolk, VA 23434, with the Rev. Myrtle Hatcher officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Whitney and Ellen Saunders following the memorial service.
