William A. Custer. Sr., 78, of Butler township, five miles southeast of Garrett, died at his home at 4 o'clock Saturday morning after a year's illness from nephritis. He had been bedfast for four days.
Mr. Custer was a distant relative of Gen. George Custer, hero of the famous Custer's last stand at the battle of Little Big Horn in Montana.
He was born October 16, 1861, in Stark county, O., and had been a resident of DeKalb county for forty-six years. Miss Arminda McKinley of DeKalb county, and he were united in marriage fifty-five years ago.
She survives as well as six children, Mrs. Lida Foust of Fort Wayne, A. J. Custer of two miles south of Garrett, William A. Custer Jr., who resides on an adjoining farm, Arthur, who lived with his father, Walter Custer of South Peters street, Garrett, and Mrs. Florence Mettert, who lives on a nearby farm; twenty-seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Cedar Chapel, the Rev. Joseph Ferguson of near Auburn, officiating, with burial following in the church cemetery.
The body was prepared at the H. A. Hinklin funeral home and was returned to the residence Sunday morning.
