Henry Fairbanks Devens II, 98, of Sewickley, passed away Friday, April 24, 2015, at the Masonic Village Assisted Living Facility. "Harry" Devens was born July 28, 1916, in New York City, the younger son of Richard and Helen Van Kleek Devens. He graduated from the Taft School in 1934. Harry was a member of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church for 77 years, maintained a longtime membership at the Allegheny Country Club and was an executive in the metals industry for both aluminum and steel. He served in the in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Harry enjoyed golf and tennis and loved his time in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he spent countless hours in his workshop. He and his wife, Eugenia, enjoyed long walks on the beach and their six o'clock cocktails overlooking the Atlantic. He was a gentle, honorable and generous gentleman, kind to all, known for his humor and unfailing courtesy to all who came in contact with him. Mr. Devens was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Clause Devens; and is survived by his three sons, Robert Clause Devens, Henry Fairbanks Devens III (Elizabeth) and Timothy Fesser Devens (Rebecca); as well as three grandchildren, Christopher Clause Devens, Carolyn Heisey Devens and Lisa Conley Bengston; and one great-grandson, Cameron Adam Bengston. Additionally, surviving Mr. Devens are his wife of 23 years, Eugenia Nash Devens; and his stepchildren, Julia Woodward, Helen Moriyama (Halley), Charles Halcomb (Ellie), Samuel Halcomb (Betsy) and Monroe Nash (Michelle); as well as 12 grandchildren, Chandler Magann, Eugenia Haynes, Caroline Chevalier, Scott Moriyama, Kyle O'Rourke, Mickey O'Rourke, Annie Halcomb, Ian Nash, Ellen Nash, Bryn Tomczak, Beau Tomczak and Lexi Schlutz; and six great-grandchildren. His humor and kindness will be greatly missed. Following a private burial at Sewickley Cemetery, a memorial service and reception will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2015, at the Clubhouse Assembly Room at Masonic Village, Sewickley, with the Rev. Tim Reichard officiating. Mr. Devens and his family are in the care of COPELAND'S SEWICKLEY, 702 Beaver St., 412-741-7100.
