Elizabeth was the daughter of David Gimlin and Mary "Polly"(Moore) Gimlin, both of whom were from Buckingham, Virginia.
She is shown in the 1850 census as having been born in Indiana, about 1813, but the 1860 census estimates her birth at about 1824. The latter is not possible since her first child was born in 1835. No birth record has been found.
She married John Burleson, Jr. in Macoupin County, Illinois on Aug. 21, 1833. They had eleven children, all born in Carlinville:
