He was an artist and a teacher, receiving several honors for art achievements. He was superintendent of construction of Veteran's Administration Medical Center and later owned Heckathorn Construction Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Hayes Heckathorn.
Survivors include his wife, Muriel Heckathorn; three sons, Walter D. Heckathorn of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Edward R. Heckathorn of Oklahoma City and James F. Heckathorn of Norman, Oklahoma; two brothers, Gilford Heckathorn of Fayetteville and Virgil Heckathorn of Kansas City, Missouri; two sisters, Zelda Carson of Fort Smith and Neda Moore of Farmington; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-greatgrandchild.
