James was working for T&P Railroad in 1910. He had been married for 7 years and was renting a home in Tarrant County. He and Leta had daughters , Jessie, Mamie, and Florence Gordon. He registered for the Draft in 1918 and was described as tall, slender, with brown eyes and dark hair. In 1920, He and Leta along with children, Jessie C, Mamie L, Florence Gordon, Francis J, William L and Erline W. were living in a rent home in Tarrant County. William was the only son. James was an express messenger at this time. In 1930, they owned their own home in Fort Worth. Children living with them were William, Erline, James, and Avery. He was still an express messenger. In 1940, he, Leta, his sons, James and Avery were still living in the home they owned on Fairview in Fort Worth. James had not completed beyond a 4th grade education.
