Roman Catholic Cardinal. Neapolitan born Roberto Tucci was baptised in the Church of England having a British Anglican mother. Accepting somewhat reluctantly his decision to convert to Catholicism, bearing in mind that it was better for him to present himself as such in pre-Second World War Italy, she did however object to his idea of joining the Society of Jesus, fearing he was still too you to decide. Running away twice from home and brought back by the carabinieri through his father's intervention, along with his friends, during his renegades he sought food at the Jesuit house of Vico Equense, becoming thus familiar with the Jesuits. Joining the latter at the named house on October 1, 1936, he underwent studies in Gallarate, Naples, the University of Louvain and the Pontifical Gregorian University, being ordained priest on August 24, 1950. Faculty member of the theological faculty of San Luigi of Naples, he founded the 'Digest religioso' journal, later renamed 'Rassegna di Teologia' of which he also served as director. Appointed member of board of writers of the renowned journal 'La Civiltà Cattolica' in 1956, of which he was named director in 1959, he acted as an expert member of the preparatory commission on lay apostolate during the Second Vatican Council. Conducting a daily press conference during the last three sessions of the Council for the journalists accredited at the Vatican Press Office, as such he served as member of the editorial committee of the pastoral instruction on social communications "Communio et progressio" when this entered its final phase between 1970 and 1971. Secretary general of the Italian province of the Society of Jesus between 1967 and 1969, for several years he served as member of the editorial board of the international theological journal 'Concilium'. Vice-president of the Italian Catholic Press Union (UCSI) from 1961 until 1982, for five years he served as official counselor for ecumenism to the superior general of the Society of Jesus, Father Pedro Arrupe. Joining the Vatican Radio in 1973, which he eventually directed up to 1985, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur by the Republic of France in 1976. Accompanying Pope John Paul II in all his international pilgrimages as organizer of the papal visits outside Italy expect for two, he was appointed president of the management committee of the Vatican Radio on January 1, 1986. The named Pope John Paul II created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of February 21, 2001 with the deaconry of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola a Campo Marzio, later to be elevated 'pro hac vice' to title on February 21, 2011. The Cardinal passed away in Rome, five days short of his ninety-fourth birthday.
