Running away twice from home and brought back by the carabinieri through his father's intervention, along with his friends, during his renegades he sought food at the Jesuit house of Vico Equense, becoming thus familiar with the Jesuits. Joining the latter at the named house on October 1, 1936, he underwent studies in Gallarate, Naples, the University of Louvain and the Pontifical Gregorian University, being ordained priest on August 24, 1950. Faculty member of the theological faculty of San Luigi of Naples, he founded the 'Digest religioso' journal, later renamed 'Rassegna di Teologia' of which he also served as director.
